This procedure goes like this: Arraignment: This is the formal reading and recording of the charges against the defendant before the judge while the defendant is present in court; Preliminary Hearing: The district attorney must demonstrate to the judge during this evidentiary hearing that there is substantial evidence to charge the defendant with the alleged offense; Pretrial Conference: A court proceeding designed to settle all disputes before to a formal trial; Plea Hearing: A plea hearing is a court appearance where the defendant enters a guilty or not-guilty plea. At this point, the prosecutor will present the defendant with some sort of deal; Trial: This is a hearing in which the judge or jury hears the evidence and decides whether or not the defendant has been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt; Sentencing: The term "sentencing" refers to a court's determination of the defendant's punishments for crimes that were shown to have been committed; and A defendant may raise an appeal at this point in the process. After sentencing, appeals may be filed at any time.
